It’s the global ganja celebration day, 4/20, so we’re shining a hydroponic lamp on some of our favourite weed-themed sneakers. From dope Nike SB Dunks to collaborative Saucony strains, let’s get this rollin’...

Nike SB Dunk High ('Hawaii', aka 'Maui Wowie')

Nike SB have a long track record of releasing weed-themed Dunks in time for April 20, but the brand seemed a little coy for their dope drop in 2021. This Hawaii-inspired colourway initially appears pretty innocuous, but the tearaway upper reveals shaggy green suede and the tongue hides a stash pocket. Nike SB claim this is for ‘secure storage’ – hmm...

Supra S1W 'Tree Camo'

Everyone knows Lil Wayne wakes up by lighting a blunt. So Supra’s ‘Vice Pack’ was a masterstroke. Including odes to candy and purple drank, the organic side dish was this ‘Tree Camo’ S1W, and we all know what kind of tree that is.

Nike SB Dunk Low 'Green Hemp'

Nike SB’s first hit of stoner styling kept its herbal habits a little more low-key. Released on 4/20 back in 2004 as part of the OG ‘Hemp Pack’ alongside baby blue and maroon make-ups, it was this botanical ‘Bonsai’ green iteration that SB heads were craving. With just 420 pairs released, you had to know a guy who knew a guy to get yourself a pair of these all-hemp joints.

Sneaker Freaker x Saucony GRID SD 'Kushwhacker'

We’re generally not ones to get high on , but how could we make a list of the best weed-themed sneakers without including our 2015 Saucony collaboration?

We hand-rolled the GRID SD in a highly potent purple haze and layered it with black widow suede against dank performance mesh, Acapulco beige formstripes, 3M reflective nugs, and a smokey-grey suede that licks the heel. Got Kush?

Nike SB Dunk High ‘Skunk Dunk’

Undoubtedly the most famous sneak with marijuana links of all time, the ‘Skunk Dunk’ was all greened-out with hazy purple pops and a not-too-subtle stash pocket behind the tongue. It dropped on 4/20 in 2010, but to this day, folks are still jonesing for a munch on the Skunk from resellers.

Vans Vault Era 'Palm Leaf'

Playing it safe with the parents’ groups, Vans Vault have sprayed their so-called ‘Palm Leaf’ print over a stack of silhouettes in the last few years, proving a hit with fashionistas and late-night tokers alike.

Nike SB Dunk High 'Cheech and Chong'

The sequel to the infamous ‘Skunk Dunk’, 1000 pairs of this Dunk SB released on April 20, 2011, a freshly harvested green upper comes pre-rolled in a white canvas to be enjoyed by those who wear their kicks down to the roach. The mismatched red panelling on these is inspired by the headwear of legendary stoner duo Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin.

HUF Hupper 420 Pack

Not to be outdone, Cali’s finest over at HUF pledged their allegiance to the leaf with this blunt take on their home-grown Hupper hightop, complete with a zip-loc baggie containing extra potent laces. Definitely not a sneaker, but potentially more eye-grabbing than a pair of Kobe 2s, the pack’s ‘Plantlife’ socks have become a staple part of HUF’s seasonal harvest and ubiquitous in the streets in summer under weedy shorts.

BAIT x adidas Stan Smith Vulc 'Happy'

Chronic collaborators BAIT brought out a blend of the West Coast’s finest just in time for 4/20. The vulcanised Stan Smith from adidas’ Skateboarding department was rolled in high-grade homegrown hemp and hit with a suitably stoned all-over debossed upper. Secret stash pockets in the tongue and ‘High Potency’ pull tabs on the heel ensured the source of inspiration behind these dank sneaks was nothing short of blunt.

Diamond Supply Co. Diamond Cuts 'Green Weed Camo'

Meanwhile, Diamond Supply Co. have no gripes about admitting the inspiration for their spinached-out sneaks. They have a stack of ‘weed camo’ patterns, including this rather tropical rendition. They even collaborated with Curren$y, the stoned immaculate himself, back in 2012 for a double hit of Mary Jane appreesh.

Cheech & Chong x DIZYGOTIC Project Alpha

In 2022, independent sneaker brand DIZYGOTIC celebrated National Dab Day (July 10) with weed legends Cheech & Chong. The duo crafted premium, hand-rolled, high-grade mismatched sneakers that arrived with a ton of intricate details.

Raised by Wolves x Saucony Aya

Canadian label Raised by Wolves provided a cheeky reefy ref in their 2019 ‘Asphalt Jungle’ Saucony Aya collaboration. Inspired by city life and 90s skateboarding, the sneaker came through with some devious details – most notably, the Muska-inspired bud bag hidden behind the tongue. They weren’t shy about showing it off, either!

Travis Scott x Air Jordan 6

La Flame was no doubt keen to pass us a light with his Air Jordan 6 collaboration. Themed on his love for the rodeo, the sought-after ‘J’ clearly has some other inspirations judging by the ultra-dank green palette and a not-so-subtle saddle bag stash pocket – making sure lucky owners are always the highest in the room!

Nike SB Dunk High 4/20 (Reverse Skunk)

Sequels rarely live up to their predecessors, but the ‘Reverse Skunk’ Dunk High has blazed into contention as one of 2020’s best sneakers. Ten years since our first toke with the OG ‘Skunk’, the limited-to-420 release takes the familiar green and purple and synthesises it into an exciting new strain. The palette may be slightly different, but the all-important stash pocket behind the tongue returns.

South Park x adidas Campus 80 'Towelie'

Enlisting one of South Park’s most iconic characters, the adidas Campus 80 ‘Towelie’ lit it up in 2021. Rendered in purple terry cloth uppers reminiscent of the baked towel, the collaboration actually adopted UV-sensitive materials for Towelie’s eyes. When exposed to light, the eyes became droopy and bloodshot. In other words, he was blazed. No doubt one of the dopest, most creative weed-themed sneakers to ever drop.

Nike SB Dunk High 'Dog Walker'

A modern classic by the mind of Nike SB designer and pot enthusiast Bryce Wong, the Nike SB Dog Walker strolled into stores in 2019. Dressed in a variety of canine-inspired patterns, the Swooshes are designed to resemble dog collars, while pooch tags ram home the theme. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a 4/20 release without a healthy smattering of green suede.

‘The first shoe I designed at Nike was the Nike SB Dunk High ‘Dog Walker’ in 2019,’ Wong told us last year. ‘That’s when we started to realise that people were open to wearing riskier, more “out there” sneakers again. Sneakerheads were also really starting to gravitate towards skate culture.’

PLEASURES x Reebok Club C Bulk ‘Not Guilty’

With all the pukish sneakers involved in 4/20, it’s easy to forget that there are also more serious matters involving the legalisation of weed. Designed to raise awareness around those still incarcerated even after cannabis has been largely legalised across the United States, the PLEASURES x Reebok Club C Bulk ‘Not Guilty’ takes a different approach to weed-themed collaborations.

‘It was an easy choice to team up and amplify our major voices on this issue,’ PLEASURES co-founder Alex James said in a press release. ‘Put some real money and awareness behind the project to get affected people out of jail and back in society.’

Honourable Mention: C1RCA Muska CM901

So we’re not saying Chad Muska’s signature C1RCA kicks with their zip-up tongue for ‘adjustable padding’ were intended to transport ganja … but we're saying they were definitely intended to transport ganja. After establishing Supra, Muska retained the stash pocket in the significantly less skate-able Skytop and Skytop II, making his purpose for the sneaky addition a little less hazy.
