Breaking Down the Differences: 2009 vs 2024 Patta x Nike Air Max 1 ‘Chlorophyll’

Patta x Nike Air Max 1
2024 (Left)/2009 (Right)

Amsterdam-based have the motto of ‘out of love and necessity, rather than profit and novelty’. The boutique retailer, who began their operations way back in 2004, have been serving the sneaker community around the globe for two decades now. Their name ‘Patta’ derives from the slang word for ‘shoe’, which is a nod to their founders Edson Sabajo and Guillaume ‘Gee’ Schmidt’s Surinamese heritage. Their rise to global sneaker stardom began humbly when these two friends started globe-trotting, buying sneakers in bulk and sending them back home.

Alongside stocking an array of curated sneakers and apparel, have undergone a plethora of that have helped bolster themselves into being sneakersphere household names. Over 50 collaborative sneakers bear the retailer's iconic logo. Their first venture began only two years into their operations including a partnership with Nike for the 4/20-friendly ‘Homegrown’. The Dutch dons then joined forces with Team Swoosh once again, celebrating their fifth anniversary with a special four-pair collection. Within this lauded four-stack was the ‘Purple Denim’, ‘Denim’, ‘Lucky Green’, and of course, ‘Chlorophyll’. The latter luscious colourway is now primed to return for the retailer’s 20th celebrations, and their latest is an almost one-for-one remake of the original. We were actually anticipating a gaggle of other differences, but Patta knocked it out of the park with this one. It’s time to break ‘em down and figure out what’s changed and what stayed the same!

The Obvious

When comparing the OG with the new, there are a few obvious changes and delicate details that have remained consistent. Patta originally launched their four-shoe Nike Air Max 1 pack in 2009 in September, and the 2023 ‘Chlorophyll’ is also scheduled to land this month. So it’s a very cutesy full-circle moment that it would be pretty much exactly fifteen years since the initial release. SKU codes have obviously changed, with the original hosting ‘366379-100’ while the retro has been given ‘HF1012-300’.

The Colourway

Another major difference between these two is the actual tone of green. Officially, the listed colourway of the original is ‘White/Chlorophyll/Matte Silver’, while the new edition is just back-to-back ‘Chlorophyll/Chlorophyll’. One of the most striking differences between the old and new is the namesake hue, which is slightly brighter on the 2024, but that may be just because the 09 is 15 years old. Another tweak that could have been due to age is the tongue label boasting a glossy finish on the newer variant.

The Shape

Nike’s legendary Air Max 1 has never really left the shelves of sneaker stores since its beginning in 1987. With that being said, it has gone through a swathe of shape changes. Recently, Nike debuted the Air Max 1 86 which threw it back to the first-ever time the AM1 was created with the ‘Big Bubble’. Subtle changes have also been present, especially when Nike changed where they manufacture. In 2009, Team Swoosh were making their Air Max 1s in Thailand, compared to today where they are made in China. The overall construction doesn’t differ too much between these periods, but there are some subtle changes. The Swoosh and the mudguards are straighter on the OG, whereas they are rounded and more pronounced on the 2024 style.

The Extra Bits

The box that houses the original is the old Nike Sportswear box, and is almost identical in the way of glossy repeated Nike logos, with a few evident new motif additions. The newer box, however, hosts an extra large graphic that celebrates Patta’s anniversary celebrations and has a different coloured sticker. You can expect the same two laces included with the 2024 version but there will be no pink throwback anatomical arch supports. In terms of how Nike have categorised this new release, they are billed as an SP (Special Project) similar to the recent retro , versus the OG which was a QS (Quickstrike).

Whether you have the OG or not, the comeback of the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 ‘Chlorophyll’ is an unprecedented surprise that we didn’t expect in 2024. Cop yours on September 13 via Patta or at Patta chapter stores.
