Three Ways to Expertly Style the Nike Tuned

Nike Tuned Black/Red

The Nike Air Max Tuned (AKA Air Max Plus or TN) celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and it still looks as fresh as it did in ‘98. Originating as a joint project between the Swoosh and Foot Locker in an effort to shake up the Air Max line, the TN was like nothing the 90s sneaker scene had seen before. It was edgier and more rebellious-looking, and its profile even earned it the nickname ‘the Shark’ in parts of Europe. A statement in itself, styling the Air Max Plus needn’t be a daunting task, and to prove that the options are endless, we’ve built three outfits around the women’s exclusive Nike Tuned ‘Red/Black/White’.

Super-Clean Street Style

One of the easiest ways to style the TN, this laid-back LA street-style look keeps the overall outfit sleek but simple and focuses on colours and cuts that draw attention to the sneaker itself. A plain white tee calls out to the colourway’s white accents, allowing them to pop against the bold red and black uppers. Nylon pants kick up the street vibe, and sit nicely with the TN’s mesh uppers.

To add more of an edge to your outfit, you’ll want to amp up the accessories. Gold jewellery lends itself well to the TN’s look, and a fitted cap will add some extra 90s flair. Finally, layering up with a statement piece like a mohair cardigan is a another way to add an elevated IYKYK fashion moment.

Lower East Side Vibe

As the TN is the rebel among the Air Max lineage, you don’t need to feel limited to pairing the sporty silhouette with sportswear staples like trackpants. It works just as well with gorpcore or utilitarian pieces, like a long parachute skirt.

When it comes to styling colourful sneakers, ‘sandwiching’ is a great technique. Here, we’ve sandwiched the skirt between the red TNs and tee, which allows each piece to share the spotlight. A cropped tee or jacket works best with a long skirt, as it keeps the proportions balanced and maintains the visual height of your 'fit.

Once again, your outfit isn’t complete without some accessories. Channel it-girl energy with some big headphones and you're set.

Borrow From the Boys

Football fashion has finally become mainstream, and thanks to major sporting moments like the Women’s World Cup, we’re seeing the trend find its way into more female-friendly spaces.

You don’t even need to stick to football jerseys – you can channel the same look with any sport – just make sure it's bright. Bold colours are a mainstay of Blokecore, but instead of ‘sandwiching’, an even more interesting option would be to create contrast with a different colour. Pulling from the Tuned’s iconic yellow badge is a great starting point, so we’ve opted for a yellow jersey. For bonus points, the jersey also has a small red logo and black edges to further complement the Tuned colourway. Finish off the look with a skirt of your choice, socks and sunnies, and voila!

Ultimately, the TN is a shoe that’s bursting with personality, so it doesn’t matter how you style it as long as you own it. Hit the link below to get your hands on a pair over at Foot Locker now.
