The ASICS GEL-KAYANO™ LEGACY Celebrates Three Decades of Kayano History
Since its inception in 1993, the has maintained its position as one of the most popular running shoes on the market thanks to its innovation, functionality and style. To celebrate this 30-year history, ASICS are releasing a LEGACY model that takes from this heritage in the ultimate tribute.
The GEL-KAYANO™ started with ASICS designer Toshikazu Kayano, who had been designing footwear with ASICS since the late 1980s. Kayano wanted to create a hybrid sneaker that provided lateral support for the gym, as well as linear support for running. He also wanted the GEL-KAYANO™ to protect the foot without sacrificing the flexibility and stability needed, much like the function of an insect's exoskeleton. These ideas culminated in technology that mirrored the armour-like characteristics of a stag beetle, and this has gone on to become an enduring trait of the GEL-KAYANO™.
Kayano designed the first 13 silhouettes of the series, and despite passing it on in 2008, the legacy of his design is still woven in the DNA of the GEL-KAYANO™ line 30 years later. The GEL cushioning has remained a constant amid modern changes, and ASICS have continued to build and improve each iteration with new technologies, materials and cushioning to ensure the GEL-KAYANO™ is the best stability runner possible.
To demonstrate this 30-year heritage and growth, the ASICS GEL-KAYANO™ LEGACY Pack incorporates elements from nine archival models. The provides the LEGACY with its foundation, and design influences are borrowed from the , GEL-KAYANO™ Trainer, GEL-KAYANO™ 6, GEL-KAYANO™ 10, GEL-KAYANO™ 12, GEL-KAYANO™ 18, and GEL-KAYANO™ 20.
The colourways of the celebratory pack also come from the rich history of the model, as it uses core colours that have appeared throughout the GEL-KAYANO series. The ‘Pure Silver’ iteration takes the silver frequently used in the mid- and late-2000s, with the metallic overlays sitting on a grey and black mesh base. The ‘White/Black’ colourway features a white base with red, blue and yellow colour accents used to highlight the different elements borrowed from other models in the series.
