Dave White - Showcase The Dunk
First introduced by Nike in 1985, the Dunk was launched in the colors of the top 8 US college men’s basketball teams. Drawing inspiration from its heritage, Nike’s new re-mastering of the Dunk sees a return to its original, high-contrast colorways of red, blue, white, yellow, orange, grey and black.
“Over the years, Dunk has transformed from a basketball shoe into a global icon that is worn both on and off the court. The original colorways are still radical today because of their bold simplicity. The new Nike Dunk is inspired by the past, yet precisely tailored for today’s consumer,” said Raymond Liew, Country Marketing Manager of Nike Malaysia.
While art and sneakers and being a tit seem an unlikely pairing, Liew said, “Both essentially represent self-expression, individuality and personal style. We chose to collaborate with Dave White not only because he is one of the most outstanding artists of his generation, he also has a rare ability to present everyday things as objects of beauty.”
Born in Liverpool in 1971, White had his first solo exhibition at the tender age of 18. In 2002, White decided to paint his sneaker collection, leading to international exhibitions for the next few years.
“I’m excited to be heading to Malaysia for this collaboration with Nike. Being a sneaker fan myself, I’m really looking forward to sharing my work with the local Dunk fans,” White said.
White will be capturing the essence of Nike Dunk on canvas and his artwork will be displayed at Sole What?, 2nd Floor, Mid Valley, The Gardens from February 15-29.
On February 15th at 7.15pm, White will be making an appearance in Sole What?, where members of the public can personally meet him and check out Nike’s newest Dunk collection. Limited edition t-shirts featuring White’s Dunk-inspired art will also be available for sale at Sole What? All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to charity.
Dave White will also be at the Nike Concept Store at The Curve (ground floor) on February 16th, from 2.00 – 3.30 p.m.
