The new movie, Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1, delves deep into one of sneaker lore’s best-known legends: NBA ‘banning’ the from the court.

As many know, the 'Bred' Air Jordan 1 wasn’t actually banned. NBA commissioner David Stern’s issue with the shoe was its colour, not any performance-enhancing tech it might have had. Furthermore, the sneaker in question was Nike’s Air Ship — the AJ1's predecessor — but Beaverton’s marketing team jumped on the opportunity to move units and the rest is history.

Dipping into the past, Jordan Brand’s new documentary tells the story like never before. Spike Lee, Michael Jordan, DJ Khaled and a host of those involved with the ‘Banned’ AJ1’s creation feature in the film, which is set to release on July 13.
