New Balance are currently riding high on the success of models like the 550, 2002R – not to mention their Made in USA and UK favourites – and are looking to keep the momentum going with the new 9060 model. Introduced via collaborations with Joe Freshgoods and Mowalola, this new dark brown colourway marks the beginning of the silhouette’s rollout for the masses, which is only a good thing.

The 9060 is developed around a concept its designers call ‘retrofuturism’, whereby elements of NB’s archive are reworked as though they were intended for the future. Here, cues from the 990 series are immediately seen on the upper, such as the suede and mesh overlay upper and protruding heel control clip. Similarly, the 860v2 provides some inspirational points and subsequently becomes exaggerated on the wavy and somewhat globular sole. There’s even a subtle reference to the 991 on the squishy tongue logo, replicating the ABZORB pods of its midsole.

On the colourway front, this dark brown palette is a murky departure from the colourful collaborations that have highlighted the 9060 so far. This may make for a more palatable pair for daily use without making too much of a statement.

Expect this new 9060 to arrive very soon at select New Balance retailers.
