Update September 4, 2023: The Nike Air Max 1 ‘Deep Royal Blue’ is available now at select global retailers. Check them out at the links below.
This upcoming colourway, known as the ‘Deep Royal Blue’, very well could’ve come out in the 2000s. It contains many hallmarks of the era, from its materials, silhouette, and most prominently, its colour placement. However, a shoe from that era would be totally unwearable today in 2023, so thankfully, this is a new release.
Many sneakerheads say the Air Max 1 experienced a golden era at the turn of the century. Given the swathe of from that time for Nike to pull from now, it’s no surprise that the ‘Deep Royal Blue’ is a powerful contender. This is because it’s almost a spitting image of the OG ‘Royal’ AM1 from 1986–87. What’s changed here is the slightly darker shade of blue used on the mudguard, plus the fact there’s black on the Swoosh, tongue label and outsole. These relative subtleties become seemingly more obvious when placed beside the truly inconspicuous components, namely the rolled tongue piping (a detail restored for 2017’s ‘Anniversary’ retro and used intermittently since) and multicoloured outsole panels. These are both elements that were last used prominently in the aforementioned golden era, in which this colourway could’ve existed.
Expect to see the Air Max 1 ‘Deep Royal Blue’ at Nike retailers later this year.
