Don't Sleep on the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon OG 'Sport Red'
Rumours have begun to surface, originating with Complex, that is allegedly preparing to resurrect the -designed in the OG ‘Sport Red’ aka 'Desert Red' colourway.
In 2019’s , we said: ‘There are sneakers that are easy to love and have legions of fans, and then there are exotics that appeal only to the tastes of ultra aficionados. Case in point is the Air Zoom Spiridon.’
Originally touching down in 1997, Nike’s mesh and foam runner was named after Spyridon Louis, who won the gold medal for marathon running in the 1896 Olympics. Despite its cult-classic status among diehard sneaker fanatics, the Zoom Spiridon has never had an ultra-successful commercial run. However, that hasn’t stopped Nike from resurrecting the silhouette a handful of times over the past two decades. The first time since its 1997 release was in 2005, followed by a string of drops between 2016 and 2018.
The last time the ‘Sport Red’ iteration released was back as a NikeLab venture, which marked the silhouette's megalithic return during that year. For the 2024 release, according to the source, who was told the news by an unnamed industry insider, the Spiridon will be part of Nike’s Holiday 2024 catalogue. This wouldn’t be a surprising turn of events if Team Swoosh did decide to resurrect the cult model, as there have been many other retros in a similar vein lately.
There’s been no confirmation from Nike as of yet on when exactly you should expect the Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Sport Red’, but stay locked to Sneaker Freaker to keep updated.
