was the ultimate sneakerhead’s sneakerhead. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the Panamanian-American was a colossal figure in hip hop and sneaker culture. Born Rodolfo Franklin, his DJ moniker was derived from Superman’s alter ego and his crew fittingly became known as ‘The Supermen’. As a producer and A&R for some of the biggest names in the business, Clark worked with on classic tracks like ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ from Reasonable Doubt and played a pivotal role in helping him secure his first major record deal. During hip hop's golden era in the 1990s, he was a key collaborator, working alongside legends like The Notorious B.I.G., Mariah Carey, and Rakim. Kent secured one of his first big hits with Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s ‘Player’s Anthem’.

Beyond his luminary hip hop career, DJ Clark Kent was an insatiable sneakerhead. Collecting sneakers since the 1980s, his legendary collection has become the stuff of sneaker lore. Of course, his relationship to the is well documented and led to several collaborations, including bespoke and friends and family editions. His nickname, ‘The Mayor’, actually comes from his unofficial title as one of the most devoted AF-1 collectors in the world. The ‘112 Pack’ from 2008 was one of his most recognisable projects. Named after the zip code of Brooklyn, the pack reflects Clark’s unyielding love for his borough and featured three classic Swoosh silhouettes: the Air Force 1, and Clark also frequently gifted pairs from his own personal collection, often posting a photo on social media with a caption hinting at where to find them.

On October 25, DJ Clark Kent passed away at age 58 following a three-year battle with colon cancer. In the wake of Clark’s death, Nike issued the following statement.

‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and true cultural icon, DJ Clark Kent. At Nike, we were honoured to collaborate with Clark on projects that celebrated not only his deep love for sneakers but also his unwavering dedication to pushing creative boundaries and elevating culture,’ the statement read. ‘His impact on the world of sneakers is beyond measure, with an influence that spans the globe and generations. Clark’s legacy will forever inspire future talent, leaving a lasting mark on our industry. Our hearts go out to Clark’s family, friends, and all those touched by his extraordinary talent, passion, and kindness. His presence will be greatly missed.’
