Serena and Virgil Weigh in on The Off-White x Nike Collection
and have appeared on CNBC to talk about the upcoming ‘Queen’ collection, why it’s happening and how big the x catalogue can get.
Obviously more focussed on being a new mother and crushing the US Open to be thinking about fire garms, Serena admits that the whole idea came from Nike and Virgil first, and that they made the magic happen. Virgil’s thoughts about the collection are more rooted in Serena and her influence. He said, ‘For me it was a no-brainer. My interest in fashion isn’t about clothing, it’s about people. I think she’s beyond an amazing athlete, she’s the muse of a generation. So the clothes design themselves.’
After taking questions about the future of athleisure and dodging the bounds of Off-White x Nike, Virgil weighs in whether he and Kanye West, as best friends working for competing sportswear brands, could ever collaborate. ‘I think competitors are for the courts just behind us. Us as designers, we’re all designing the world at one time. In the design space it’s about the best creativity. Kanye and I have been best friends and will be best friends until the end of time. Creatives just create.’ From that, we’ll deduce that the answer is ‘no’.
