It first started as a model from the early 1960s called the ‘Olympiade’, before it was then turned into the Gazelle in 1966. There were two OG iterations, with the red variation for indoor sports and the blue for training. No, he didn’t wear them in the pool, but he did thrust his blue pair into the air on the podium at the 1972 Games.
The ‘Olympic’ Gazelles have a dark red base with a lateral pinstripe creating length. A lighter red hits the suede T-toe and eyelets, whereas green rounds it out on the heel cuff. White adds contrast on the Three Stripes, laces, tongue and sock liner. The defining feature is of course the Olympic torch on the tongue, which has the adidas Trefoil embedded in it. The yellow in the torch complements the gold foil on the Gazelle branding, and the green and red also match other features of the design.
