UNC Hues Peek Out From the Air Jordan 3 'Lucky Shorts'
As continue, so do the run of releases paying homage to MJ's history. The next major moment to receive a nod calls back to one of the baller’s biggest superstitions – his lucky shorts – which have now been immortalised in the form of the ‘Lucky Shorts’ .
Those familiar with their Jordan lore may know the origin story of the lucky shorts, but if not, here’s a quick refresher. The idea comes from Jordan’s superstitious belief that wearing his UNC practice shorts made him ball out better in the NBA. The shorts in question date back to his UNC Tar Heel days, when Jordan solidified the team’s place in the Championship in 1982 thanks to a late-game jumpshot. His Airness continued to wear the shorts under his NBA uniform in his later playing career, including his 87-88 season.
While MJ and the NBA had been known to clash over the league’s , the Air Jordan 3 ‘Lucky Shorts’ theme boasts a relatively subtle amount of UNC blue, as the colour splashes the Jumpman logos, heel counters and upper and lower eyelets. Otherwise, the ‘Lucky Shorts’ AJ3 features a crisp white base and sees the usual elephant print panels come replaced with soft grey suede. On the back of the tongue, the pair features a new label designed to replicate those seen on basketball shorts, which calls out to Jordan exercising his superstition during the aforementioned season.
