The Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Metallic’ Shines Bright at JD Sports
Many sneakerheads regard the as one of the most extraordinary designs to ever take flight from runway. Inspired by the GOAT’s militant attitude on the hardwood, designer looked to America’s WWII P-51 jets to spark his imagination, birthing the assertive fifth signature. Fame followed that 1990 debut, with four OG colourways plastered onto the sneaker walk of fame, no doubt with the help of the legendary Mars Blackmon campaign. However, out of the bunch only one of the original colourways reigns supreme and that is the ‘Black Metallic’. Now, JD Sports welcomes the return of a legend this February.
The Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Metallic’ 2025 release is one of the sneaker industry's worst kept secrets, with rumours of the drop emerging mid-2024. For this retro, Jordan Brand went all in on making them as close to the OG as possible, with Nike Air branding, plush suede upper, speckled metallic silver midsole detailing, red accents and the usual midfoot netting.
This year’s ‘Black Metallic’ will mark the fifth time the colourway has received a retro, which doesn’t count the Michael Jordan Player Exclusive from the 90s. The first bring back went down in 2000 with Nike Air branding, ten years after its debut. Pairs in 2007 and 2011 followed, which featured Jumpman heel branding and ’23’ logos to replicate the PE version. Other than this year, the last time these came back was in 2016.
