Comme Des Garçons X Nike Dunk High (Clear)
UPDATE: According to famed designer Rei Kawakubo, the new Comme Des Garçons x Nike Dunk was built with reference to Hans Christian Andersen's fabled emperor – whose vanity sees him fooled into donning invisible clothing – as a nod to our modern culture of oversharing. Social commentary aside, it all boils down to a cracker of a Dunk. They drop February 8 at Comme NY, so make sure you grab them before disappear.
UPDATE: This curious collaboration between and the dropped in Japanese CDG stores earlier this month without a word of warning. While appearing to be a regional exclusive at first, word of a wider release has begun to spread from the most unusual of sources. According to , a February 8 release date has been set for Stateside CDG stockists with a $290 asking price. Sneakers aren't typically the WSJ's speciality, so we'll be awaiting further confirmation, but make sure you have your money ready – just in case!
The mid-2000s was an important period in sneaker history, establishing the focus on retros and collaboration upon which much of today's scene is built. Among all the long-lasting trends that period that gave birth to, there was one that remained a little more flash in pan – clear sneakers. Birthed with the ESPO x Air Force II in 2004, the unusual kicks featured plastic windows that exposed the foot within. You had to make sure your sock game was on point if you were going to attempt to stunt in a pair of these – and a sweaty foot made for some foggy footwear.
While the trend only lasted until 2006 before dying out, it looks like Japanese fashion label are set on bringing about its renaissance with the release of a 'clear' High. The colab features clear plastic toeboxes and side wall underlays, with overlays of premium black leather and a milky white plastic heel counter. Co-branded insoles add a finishing touch.
Judging by a post uploaded by Instagram user , it appears that the COMME des GARÇONS x Nike Dunk High 'Clear' is available to purchase right now through CDG stores in Japan. No word on a release outside of Japan, but you can bet that this one sneaker that will drop without warning if it does – stay alert!
