Converse and Martine Ali Give the Chuck 70 a New (W)edge
Y2K styling has dominated the trend cycle over the past year or so, and Brooklyn-based designer Martine Ali is in the perfect place to capitalise on it. Known for creating jewellery and accessories that are inspired by 90s grunge and hip-hop culture, Ali is now stepping into a new project via a colab with . Applying her signature edgy style to the classic , Converse and Ali now present the Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge.
With a penchant for modular and edgy pieces, Ali’s take on the Converse silhouette sees her transform the wedge-heeled shoe into a convertible style. As the first designer to introduce a take on the De Luxe Wedge silhouette, Ali has applied a New York-inspired twist, adding a removable gaiter and metallic finishes.
The shoe itself arrives in an all-black make-up, so its full leather uppers, tonal patches, chunky midsoles and toe caps all take on the dark hue. The gaiter part is designed to be breathable and features minimal branding, full-length zips and wax laces. It can be attached or removed via a set of studs, which add a utilitarian vibe.
The campaign comes to life through images directed by Ali and shot by Hannah Sider, and spotlights some of the creatives that form part of Ali’s community. Through this, Ali aims to display a diverse representation of femininity. The release also marks an important step in Converse’s future plans – where it will continue to repurpose its DNA through the lens of those who are shaping culture.
The Converse x Martine Ali Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge drops at Converse on December 12. In the meantime, stay locked to Sneaker Freaker for all the latest news and releases.
