Grey is Great is for the New Balance 996
The remains a bit of a sleeper hit in the 99x series as it’s often bookended by the and , but it still has something of a cult following over in Japan. Which means the Far East often gets first dibs to unique editions like this all-grey makeup.
Yes, grey can be unique for a New Balance sneaker. This particular colourway sees the majority of the upper made from classic suede, with some airy mesh inserts on choice panels like the toe box and tongue. Crisp white accents on the N logo and counter strip add a little extra contrast along with the gold counter branding.
In recent years, the 996 has been manufactured in both the US and in the Far East; this release is from the latter. But that’s not to say there’s a drop in quality. Thankfully, NB have swapped the previous REVlite midsoles for a more accurate C-CAP type, which should hold up better with prolonged use. And this midsole is paired up to gum outsoles, automatically making this a great grey colourway.
This New Balance 996 is available now from Japanese outpost atmos, but there is always the possibility a handful of units can make it abroad.
