Mizuno’s MXR Tech Channels Big 2000s Energy
With 2000s energy still surging in the sneaker industry in 2024, it’s only fitting that would dig into the vault for inspiration on a design that expertly blends retro-futurist running visuals with Y2K tech vibes. Enter: the MXR series. Showcasing the Japanese brand's esteemed modern day craftsmanship, the MXR series comes in three distinct variations (Sport, Casual, and Tech) and all signs point to it becoming a cornerstone of Mizuno’s sportstyle category. After the Sport variation released earlier in the year, the first release for the MXR Tech has now just landed, with the model coming in a two-pack of metallic pace-setters that appear in black and beige.
The debut MXR Tech iterations certainly capture that blend between sport and style, with enough on show here to keep you poring over the details until the new year. Both have been constructed with intricate synthetic rubber overlays and heavy-duty ripstop and rope laces, while reflective print exudes trademark Y2K running aesthetics and multiple rubber components are used for colour blocking. On the black edition, the murdered-out components are broken up by metallic detailing on the iconic Runbird logos, tongue tags and speckled laces, whereas the lighter colourway takes on a white and beige base with similar metallic accents again reinforcing its Y2K credentials.
Toeing the line between innovation and heritage, Mizuno’s MXR actually taps into the Maximizer line for inspiration – an early 2000s line embodying the Japanese label's old-school, tech-tinged DNA.
