New Balance Render the 990v3 in Leather Instead of Suede
99x series is forever associated with grey combos of suede and mesh, but this new release rather dramatically sees the former material swapped out for smooth leather instead. While this seemingly simple substitution wouldn’t bat eyelids for most brands, it’s almost scandalous for NB. Well, that’s a bit hyperbolic, but it certainly is different to the norm for the , which otherwise maintains its usual hallmarks.
This mostly grey colourway is accented with navy on the toe box and ankle collar overlays, plus a matching tongue top. Looking like a pastiche of NB’s core combination, the addition of flat leather against the lighter grey mesh creates extra textural depth. If anything, this material and colour mix is reminiscent of other flagship models, namely the 1600 and 1700.
Other elements of this 990v3 are kept true to the original, namely the two-toned grey and white ENCAP sole, carbon fibre arch stabiliser, reflective N logos, and mesh lining. After all, these running-ready elements are the foundation of the entire 99x line; changing those would crumble the very essence of the shoes. Again, a little OTT, but switching to leather is already a move.
Raffles are open now for this new 990v3 at Extra Butter, which will be drawn on April 9.
