New Balance Give the 996 a GORE-TEX Upgrade
The is still something of an underrated model in the 99x thanks to being the middle sibling of the and – but sneakerheads in Japan know not to sleep on it. Now, their loyalty is being rewarded with what’s likely a regional exclusive in the form of an upgraded edition.
At a glance, this looks like just any other regular grey 996: grey suede and mesh uppers, reflective N logos, and fabric lining are standard issue. But beneath the surface is a breathable, waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, rendering the upper impermeable to the elements.
This 996 is the latest in a batch of models made in Asia instead of NB’s native USA – but that’s no indictment on its quality. The materials are admirable, and the GORE-TEX addition is an excellent value proposition. Plus, NB has eschewed the REVlite midsoles found on previous editions and reverted to the more accurate C-CAP compound. In short, this is the OG grey 996 – but now it’s waterproof.
The New Balance 996 GORE-TEX will likely be exclusive to Japanese retailers, such as mita sneakers, who have stock available now. International buyers may require a forwarding service.
