New Balance Are on a Tear with the 2002 ‘Protection’ Pack
lifestyle lineup may be dominated by the ever popular 99x series, but the last nine months have seen a new retro take its place among the brand’s heavy hitters. The continues NB's tear, and the folks from Beantown are following up a slew of mega colabs and strong GR releases with the ‘Protection’ Pack.
Originally released in 2010, the 2002R, as it is now called, takes NB’s signature aesthetic and dials it up. A familiar mesh and suede upper is layered for textural variation, with smooth and shaggy skins bringing some pleasing contrast. The layers’ rough-cut form may not have worked in less deft hands, but the folks at New Balance have done it right. As they have with the colour palette, too – keeping them neutral to let the unique fabrication shine. Charcoal and white versions keep things ultra simple, while the grey (they had to do it) sees light and dark shades employed expertly. Adding the finishing touch, and a cushy ride, is the N-ergy sole unit down below.
