Today, in the Big Apple, Nike have announced new innovation that is set to take running to another level at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Three years after creating the Zoom Vaporfly 4%, Nike have added a new ingredient into the mix: Air.

With this addition, we’re set to see Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%, Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT%, Nike Air Zoom Victory, and the Nike Zoom Viperfly hit the market.

Nike Air is still the most responsive cushioning platform on the market and, in the ultimate test run, Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 in Vienna, breaking the  wearing a prototype of the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%. Tweaks were made, and it’s safe to say that  won’t be taking place on these new releases at the Tokyo 2020 games.

Here’s a breakdown of the key features for each release.

Nike Alphafly NEXT%

Nike Zoom Air pods: Two new pods in the forefoot to minimise energy loss.

More ZoomX foam: An increased stack height provides an ultra-soft and responsive ride.

Nike Atomknit upper: With temperatures set to hit a record high during the Olympics, considerations needed to be made on breathability to minimise sweat absorption in the upper. Specifically designed for racing, Atomknit provides a contoured fit with less stretch for more support.

Modified carbon fibre plate: The wider and flatter plate that accommodates and better interacts with the Nike Zoom Air pods side-by-side in the forefoot, creates a smoother transition.

Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT%

Along with the Nike Zoom Air pods and ZoomX Foam seen in the Nike Alphafly NEXT%, the Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% features Nike React Foam in the heel where more impact protection and durability is needed.

Nike Air Zoom Victory

Welded Nike Air Zoom pod: A Zoom Air bag divided into two separate pockets in the midsole allows for the benefit of air underfoot without sacrificing control.

Nike ZoomX Foam, carbon fibre plate and TPU outsole: The combination of ZoomX and Zoom Air is one of Nike’s most powerful innovation combos.

Nike Atomknit Upper: This lightweight and breathable upper has various knits throughout the body of the shoe, providing less support in the heel and a denser knit in the forefoot.

The Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% will be available to NikePlus members in early 2020 with a wider release set for later in the year. The Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% hits the market around March 2020. Stay tuned for more.
