Originally released in 2012, the is still one of the most beloved models in vast archive. Designed by Eric Avar, the low-cut, lightweight mesh silhouette again took cues from Nike’s football department and cleat design. The Nike Kobe 8 Protro series (which updates classic Kobe models with modern performance technology) remains popular among the NBA fraternity today, with players like DeMar DeRozan and PJ Tucker lacing the model on the hardwood.

There’s now reports that the Nike Kobe 8 Protro ‘What The Kobe’ will make a reappearance in 2025. The legendary colourway first made its mark back in December 2013, incorporating nearly 30 colourways (yes, you read that correctly) from previous Kobe 8 designs. The right shoe is dressed in a green and orange shade with a volt Swoosh, whereas the left pair has a blue and purple upper and a pink-orange Swoosh.

In the engine room, we can expect all the technological advancements emblematic of the Protro line, including Nike React foam (replacing the original Lunarlon cushioning). Other vintage elements are retained, including the classic herringbone traction pattern from the original Kobe 8 and embroidered Swoosh and Mamba logos.

Currently, there’s no information on whether the new ‘What The Kobe’ will be a 1:1 remake or a new design entirely. But make sure to keep it locked to Sneaker Freaker for updates.

In the meantime, make sure to Kyrie Irving’s latest signature model, the ANTA KAI 1 ‘Twin Flame’.
