Nike has resurrected one of their most coveted performance constructions, the 2008 Lunarlon Foam, and given it an outer space inspired tooling to craft a new running shoe for taking small steps and giant leaps – the Nike Lunar Roam.

The Lunarlon light-weight cushioning system was a popular technology that fuelled multiple Nike performance sneakers. It was a versatile tech that spanned across their running, basketball, skateboarding, tennis, and training lines. Inspired by astronauts bouncing on the moon, the light-weight Lunarlon cushioning was 30 per cent lighter than customary Phylon foam and provided even impact distribution so that athletic activities had a zero-gravity glide while still providing balance. The tech was notably featured in the Nike Hyperdunk 2012 and was a popular running shoe, but when Nike made the switch to react tech, the beloved cushioning system was slowly lost. But it's making a comeback, and we have Nike’s recent fascination with revisiting 2000s products to thank for the relaunch of a new and improved Nike Lunar Roam.

Constructed with an engineered mesh upper, the body rests atop the signature Lunarlon sole system and painted with a ‘Lemon Drop’ yellow. The colour palette back up top consists of the sci-fi hues ‘Alabaster’ and ‘Green Abyss’, while jet-black lines overlap with green blocking over the Swoosh logo on the midfoot and heel. As the finishing touch, dark grey TPU mudguards contrast the soft cream base.

For the launch of the Lunar Roam, Nike have returned to the roots of the Lunarlon Foam’s inception, which was a product of four years of research with the aerospace industry. As part of the shoe’s release, Nike have transformed the solebot at solebox Berlin into a moon landscape, displaying the reimagined silhouette.

The Nike Lunar Roam will land on 16 December via solebox.com and solebox Berlin with a $150 price tag.
