Nike Releasing the Dunk High ‘Varsity Maize’ Sooner Than You Think
are preparing to release another colourway from the OG 1985 Be True to Your School series: the ‘Varsity Maize’. Long regarded by many sneakerheads as one of the most significant editions of the Dunk because of its multifaceted relevance, the black and yellow palette has represented, among its many appearances, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Wu-Tang Clan.
Previously known as the ‘Goldenrod’, the name change likely comes from a slightly different shade of yellow used this time, but it looks like Nike have restored some details used in earlier editions. For example, the lining is now smooth nylon as used on the ’85 OG, ’99 retro, and ’05 SB version. The tongue is lightly padded nylon, but the black piping instead of the yellow may be a deal-breaker for some. As is the yellow insole fabric rather than the black – but this is some seriously deranged nitpicking. Otherwise, the perfectly colour-blocked leather upper, choice of either yellow or black laces (though yellow comes highly recommended), and crisp white midsole looks fantastic.
Following recent leaks and dodgy looks, the Nike Dunk High ‘Varsity Maize’ finally releases on December 9 via selected Nike retailers. Expect raffles to open up soon.
