Nina Chanel Abney Reworks the Air Jordan 2
Nina Chanel Abney’s collaboration is on its way, evident by the emergence of official imagery overnight. Like its , the artist’s effort is a refreshingly simple rework of the revived model that’s seen some fairly extravagant executions from other collaborators. This pair also serves a healthy dose of reverence for the OG model, which is expressed via the Bulls-ish colourway.
Unlike the sturdy boot mould that the 1986 AJ2 was based off, Abney’s iteration is a little more dainty. The lace hardware used on the original to reinforce the midfoot eyelets have gone the way of the dodo (or, to use a basketball example, the Seattle Supersonics), resulting in a much cleaner look. Furthermore, the somewhat overbuild heel counter of the OG has been replaced by a clean panel of smooth red leather.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t premium elements befitting of the original AJ2, which was made in Italy back in the day. The lizard textured overlay still wraps the rear quarter; now the laces are also waxed, giving the pair some pizzazz. The packaging is similarly fancy, depicting Abney’s artwork applied to an archival MJ photo.
Like the low-cut pair, the Nina Chanel Abney is expected to release on July 8.
