‘Olive Canvas’ Adds Utility to the ASICS GEL-Lyte III
The seemingly endless material explorations of the continues with the ‘Olive Canvas’ editions remixing the former flagship runner into a more utilitarian street sneaker. And despite the name of the pack, these two GL3s do not feature a single panel of canvas. Instead, it’s a rugged upgrade to sturdier weather-resistant materials ready for the upcoming cold seasons in the northern hemisphere.
While originally configured in microfibre and nylon mesh for optimal ventilation and lower weight, the impending foul weather necessitates a more appropriate mixture of suede, leather and rubberised panels for the GL3. This latter material runs along the toe bumper, mudguard and heel counter for essential water resistance between the sole and upper. Velvety suede is a much warmer material for the upper, which covers the tongue and toe box, while leather tiger stripes add some textural depth to the dark olive, black and yellow colourways.
On the hardware front, the usual midfoot eyelets are swapped out for durable metal D-rings, evoking the utilitarian nature of this pack. Other components are kept in good working order, from the predictably comfortable GEL midsole to the split tongue design, which is still unique over 30 years since the GEL-Lyte III’s debut.
