Ready to Drop $400 on the Swarovski x Nike Air Max 97 ‘Polar Blue’?
The constant stream of sneaker releases can sometimes mean it all becomes one big blur. When multiple colourways of the same shoe release in quick succession one after another – then multiply that by the number of major categories across all the brands – it has the potential to become much of a muchness. However, this new collaboration between and on the literally outshines every other sneaker in its vicinity.
Third time’s the charm for Swarovski, having previously released two glistening takes on the AM97 with its crystal-encrusted uppers. First was a sparkly ‘Silver Bullet’ OG colourway in 2017, then the luxe concept was revisited the following year on the other ‘Metallic Gold’ catalogue edition. Now, the 2021 reprisal goes back to the silver scheme, but introduces a new ‘Polar Blue’ accent.
Hundreds of thousands of very fine crystal fragments are dusted across this AM97’s ridged upper, eschewing the need for reflective strips because the Swarovski addition is plenty shiny. Mesh inserts in between the crystals maintain some semblance of OGness, and the minimal ‘Polar Blue’ accents on the arch Swooshes, tongue logo, and outsole portions are period correct.
Because of the somewhat delicate nature of the crystalline uppers, the usual hidden lace loops might put too much strain on the material when tightened, so standard eyelets with reinforced eyestays are used instead. Smart, considering retail on these 97s is $400.
Yes, $400. Part with it on March 25 from very select Nike retailers, and flex them the following day for Air Max Day.
