Sneaker Scholars, Go To JD Sports for the Air Jordan 9 ‘University Blue’
The may be an underrated model in signature sneaker series, but new editions like the upcoming ‘University Blue’ might make things a little more high profile. For some hardcore nerds, this colourway is actually a very deep cut. Here’s some sneaker history...
In the 1993–94 NBA season, the league was given a reprieve from MJ’s dominance as he stepped off the court to pursue a career in baseball. That didn’t mean his presence was suddenly gone: a select few were chosen to have Player Exclusive colourways of the AJ9 that swapped out its red accent for the players’ corresponding team colours. One of these players was Anfernee ‘Penny’ Hardaway, whose AJ9 PE was white/black/blue to match his Orlando Magic uniform.
That Hardaway scheme is what Jordan Brand have referenced here with the new ‘University Blue’ edition. While it’s not the exact shade of Magic blue, the obscure reference will please the passionate collectors. For everyone else, it’s a sweet two-toned white and black high-top with a strong griptape-style contrast mudguard, hooked lace system, and ridged midsole for old-school bball style. Hits of its namesake ‘University Blue’ accent the heel and outsole Jumpman branding. A simple and clean palette swap.
