Pay-It-Forward for the Second Release of the Social Status x Nike Air Max Penny 1 'Recess'
News on this release was first published on July 2, 2022.
Update July 19, 2022: Social Status are preparing a second release of the Nike Air Max Penny 1 'Recess' in both colours on July 22. Additionally, customers can help the retailer Pay-It-Forward this back to school period by nominating someone in need, or an organisation helping families with BTS to also receive a pair. Those without a person or organisation to elect can have Social Status' Whitaker Project team help them choose which cause or group to support.
Update July 18, 2022: Following the release via Whitaker group stores over the weekend, the Social Status x Nike Air Max Penny 1 will also drop on SNKRS! July 22 has been locked in for the 'Light Orewood Brown' pair. No confirmation has come through on a wider release of the black iteration.
and have long put community empowerment and rich storytelling at the centre of their collaborative ethos, and the next chapter in their tale is the 'Recess' collection. It's never just about the shoes for Social Status founder James Whitner, and although both of the 'Recess' collection's takes on first signature sneaker have Swoosh fiends salivating, Whitner's team have made sure their Pennys are accompanied by a rich story – one that continues the tale started by the collection in 2021.
Appearing in 'Black' and 'Desert Sand' colourways, the Social Status x Nike Air Max Penny 1 features premium leather and suede construction, custom heel graphics, and, most notably, interchangable Swooshes that nod to schoolyard sports and games like basketball and baseball. The 'Black' pair is similar to the OG Air Max Penny 1 that Penny Hardaway took to the court in as a member of the Orlando Magic, while the 'Desert Sand' offers a clean, mostly monochromatic look.
It wouldn't really be a Social Status x Nike colab without an accompanying video, and Social Status have also tapped the Turner Brothers' Dreadhead Films production company for a Recess film. Just over six minutes in length, the film shows how a school can affect children from underserved neighbourhoods, from the lessons learned in both the classrooms and the halls to the relationships and friendships that it forges. Sharp-eyed fans will notice that the cast of the Free Lunch film returns for Recess, and they're accompanied by comedian Lou Young, who plays a wisecracking (but caring) bus driver.
The Social Status x Nike Air Max Penny 1 'Recess' collection's rollout will commence on July 2 with in-store raffles at every Whitaker Group store (Social Status, A Ma Maniére, APB and Prosper), a raffle on the Social Status webstore and a Whitaker Group Discord member's only draw. They'll then release on July 15. An extended size run from men's 3.5 to 15 (women's 5 to 16.5) will be available and each pair is priced at $190.
