The Social Status x Nike Air Penny 2 in Black/White will launch early via a raffle through all Whitaker group stores on September 20. This pair will also release online via Social Status on September 30. The White/Blue pair will release at a later date.
After the official reveal of the x comes the immediate surfacing of another Swoosh collaboration for the boutique retailer. The model’s sequel, the , is also joining the paired-up party with two colourways en route. However, unlike the first duo, these Pennies are relatively more restrained on the detail front – but there are still some interesting components to peruse.
Built on white and black bases, it looks like Social Status have used the OG home and away colourways based on the team kit of Penny Hardaway’s Orlando Magic but lightened up the tones. Instead of the rich royal blue that accented the originals, these retro ballers feature lighter shades of powdery blue, which still allows the shoes to look like they came straight out of a circa 1997 Nike Basketball catalogue.
While these colourways look like reimagined OGs, Social Status do leave their mark on the shoes and beyond. On the lateral ankle, instead of the distinct ‘1 Cent’ logo used on Penny signature models, there’s the retailer’s overlapping triangle design. This motif is also repeated on the shoe boxes, which reference the iconic ‘Li’l Penny’ character that was famously associated with Hardaway’s Nike ads in the 1990s.
