Sustainable Style: The Iconic adidas Stan Smith Goes Green
Debuting back in the 1970s, the remains one of the most timeless sneakers , transcending its court origins to become a symbol of sneaker versatility. And now the classic crep enters a brand new chapter in 2021, emerging more sustainable than ever. Of course, the legendary good looks are kept intact, but if you dig beneath the clean white exterior you’ll discover the ‘Stan’ has gone green.
Redesigned as part of the Three Stripes’ pledge to use only recycled polyester by 2024, the latest rendition of the Stan Smith is constructed with a vegan upper, and an outsole made from rubber waste. Foregoing the traditional leather, the aforementioned upper is made with Primegreen, a high-performance material constructed with 50 per cent recycled content, and no virgin polyester. The next evolution of adidas’ famed Parley for the Oceans partnership, Primegreen – as well as the recently introduced Primeblue – represents the brand’s commitment to end plastic waste for good.
The rest of the new Stan stays true to its original design, coming through with the low profile and clean lines that have made it a rotation staple for over four decades. Printed in traditional green, the familiar Stan Smith portrait graphic hits the tongue, while the Trefoil and Stan Smith print dress the heel tab. As always, the perforated Three Stripes on the side panel subtly elevate the clean aesthetic.
