The ASICS GT-II Ascends Mt. Fuji
have quietly returned their under appreciated retro runner to sneaker store shelves in light of the model’s 35th anniversary. After reissuing the , two new additions are set to make the roster a bit more vibrant. These premium remakes are inspired by ASICS’ home country of Japan. This time, more specifically, homage is paid to the natural landmark that is Mt. Fuji.
OG GT-II colourways in the ‘Glacier Grey’ and ‘Monaco Blue’ stuck to a performance-oriented material combination of nylon and microfibre. However, 35 years on, the casual leanings of the retro style are realised with an all-over suede build, with generous perforated panels a la Ronnie Fieg’s mid-2010s collaborations on the model. Here, an ‘Apricot’ tonal upper is met with dark blue Tiger Stripes on the lateral side, while the medial is a lighter shade. The other colourway in this pack is a rich ‘Smoke Blue’, paired to silver Tiger Stripes on both sides. A debossed image of a mountain nods to this pair’s Mt. Fuji inspiration. Underfoot, the proven GEL system still delivers impressive comfort decades on, as the GT-II was one of the first ASICS shoes to use the technology.
The ASICS GT-II ‘Mt. Fuji’ pack is out now from boutique retailers including 43einhalb.
