The Clarks Originals Sashiko Collection Is a Thing of Beauty
are tapping two of their most coveted silhouettes for the upcoming Sashiko collection – the Desert Boot and Wallabee Boot – both taking inspiration from ancient Japanese craft.
A tradition dating back to 17th century Japan, Sashiko (which translates to ‘little stabs’ in reference to the simple running stitches applied) was once used to mend and maintain clothing. Formerly a practical necessity, the art of Sashiko now enjoys a more decorative form seen across contemporary fashion and footwear.
Typically embroidered on fabric dyed and inky indigo, Clarks are paying homage to the time-honoured technique by combining premium deep-blue suede with crisp off-white embroidery on both models. Triangular patchwork designs allude to the Japanese Boro method (reworking textiles through piercing, patching and stitching), while hand-finished toes and heels highlight Clarks’ inimitable craftsmanship.
Of course, also extending the heritage hallmarks of Clarks’ legendary trio, the collection is replete with luxurious hand-stitched elements, leather finishes and embellished grosgrain ribbon – all of which are employed to emphasise Clark’s crafted feel.
