The Nike ‘Lucha Libre’ Collection Celebrates Mexican Culture
Mexico’s rich culture has been the muse for many sneakers over the years, and the next batch of inspired shoes taps back into the sporting spectacle that is Lucha Libre. Various Swoosh sneakers have referenced this traditional event in the past, and now a new trio consisting of the , , and tags in.
The Blazer straddles the fine line between extravagant and gaudy in its teal satin upper that’s accented with beige snakeskin bumpers, and a shining golden Swoosh. This colourway is finished with stark black midsoles and laces, the latter in reference to the traditional closure found at the back of Mexican wrestling masks.
The Air Force 1 is an outrageous all-silver affair, with metallic Swooshes complementing the removable lace attachments that replicate the intricate eye decorations on the aforementioned masks.
Finally, the Air Max 90 is an asymmetrically colour-blocked black and white edition, representing the good against evil narrative of Lucha Libre: ‘Los Técnicos versus Los Rudos’. Patent panels and colourful branding up the details.
The Nike Lucha Libre collection forms part of a wider Nike Geo Express Lane (GEL) category, and will see more releases in the future. This initial drop will land in Mexico on September 11 with a restock on September 14, followed by global availability from September 17.
