The Nike ‘Waffle One’ Opens Proceedings in ‘Active Fuchsia’
deep connection to waffle technology, and its accompanying aesthetic, is about to write another chapter in the company’s proud history of innovation, with the impending release of a new model: the Waffle One. Seemingly borrowing design inspiration from both the and the , the new silhouette is expected to hit the 2021 scene in a range of colourways. This particular rendition uses ‘Active Fuchsia’ and ‘University Gold’ to make its statement, while black and white are also heavily featured.
Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman entered footwear folklore back in the early 1970s when he memorably ‘borrowed’ the family waffle iron from his kitchen while experimenting with new tread patterns to improve grip on the University of Oregon athletics track where he coached his running protégés. Bowerman’s ongoing quest for innovation was a key driver behind Nike’s eventual ascension into the upper echelons of the sportswear industry, working alongside fellow founder Phil Knight to continually evolve the footwear available to athletes.
Original pairs of waffle-soled runners created by Bowerman can fetch quite the sum via auction houses but, thankfully, this latest silhouette is expected to be more in the price range of the average sneaker fiend. Pairs of the Waffle One are expected to land soon, so keep an eye on Nike and selected Swoosh stockists.
