These New Balance 998s Are ‘MADE Responsibly’
Made In USA arm is back with another limited run of ‘MADE Responsibly’ using excess materials and spare parts sourced from around their factory, in a bid to minimise scraps and waste.
Because the 998 has been part of the New Balance NB1 custom program for some years now, there is an excess of suede and mesh panels, plus plenty of spare midsoles. The only new parts required are foam padding for the lining and tongue, and the heel counter.
Unlike the releases that their Made In UK counterparts have been releasing every other season, and are uniformly identical, each pair of ‘MADE Responsibly’ 998s are completely unique and one-offs. It’s an enticing proposition for both completionist collectors and sneakerheads looking for something different for their rotation. And some of the colourways on preview are certainly out there: lurid black and yellow killer bee combos and Lakers-inspired purple and gold pairings are just two potential options.
The New Balance 998 ‘MADE Responsibly’ is set to release on May 1 directly from New Balance. As these are one-of-ones, NB are not accepting returns – though it’s unlikely anyone with a pair will be getting in contact with customer service.
