This New Balance 991 is Dark and Brooding
Timely celebrations for the are definitely now in full swing as the amount of upcoming colourways ramps up. Following the recent 20th anniversary editions, NB take their former flagship down a dark and brooding turn with this colourway, which is codenamed M991DNB.
New Balance sneakers may typically be associated with grey, but they also have a proven track record with other mature shades like navy and brown, and that’s exactly what’s on show here. This 991 sticks to the fairly original specification of alternating panels of suede and mesh, with the latter providing airy ventilation to key areas like the toe box and tongue. Aniline navy suede is used on sections that are more prone to abrasion, such as the toe bumper and heel counter. Meanwhile, additional brown overlays add tasteful contrast, as does the matching external heel cradle.
Underfoot, the two-toned ABZORB midsole is period correct, and its cushioning capabilities have aged particularly well. Everything is wrapped up nicely by the fact the 991 continues to be part of NB’s Made In England line, meaning these are some of the highest quality sneakers money can buy.
The 991’s international appeal was confirmed when this new colourway released at Japan’s atmos on April 2, while it’s likely pairs will also land at international retailers.
Update: The New Balance 991 M991DNB is available now directly from New Balance.
