Vans Celebrate The Half Cab's 30th Anniversary With New Skate Half Cab '92
Even with the infusion of countless corporate dollars in the past two decades, skateboarding has been fueled by a strong DIY spirit since its inception. One of the finest physical examples of that spirit is ' classic , a shoe that's turning 30 this year and celebrating its anniversary with a new Skate Half Cab '92 model.
First introduced to the market in 1992 as second signature sneaker, the Half Cab was a product of enterprising skaters who'd chop a chunk of the collar off of the ultra high-top Caballero (released in 1989 and now known as the Full Cab), then seal the jagged new collar with duct tape to give themselves more flexibility and less bulk. The Skate Half Cab '92 boasts a classic colourway and a last that's largely unaltered from the original, but under the hood is plenty of modern-day skate tech!
The most notable features are a DURACAP underlay that eliminates 'hot spots' while removing excess bulk, an energy-returning PopCush insole and an outsole that uses SickStick, a new gum rubber compound that's proprietary to Vans. Other features include moulded heel counters, elastic tongue straps for enhanced lockdown and a heavy knurl pattern on toe bumpers. The Skate Half Cab '92 offers three classic colourways as well: navy canvas, taupe canvas and red/white leather. All are completed with a classic Vans Skateboarding patch on the lateral quarter.
