The Nike Kobe 9 Protro ‘What The Kobe’ Returns

2025 is shaping up to be a blockbuster year for Kobe Bryant signature series, with the Black Mamba’s iconic catalogue aligning with the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake. We’ve already caught wind of two venomous renditions of the Kobe 5 Protro, and now two 'What The Kobe' retro colourways – the Kobe 8 Protro and Kobe 9 Protro – are making their way to the spotlight.

Originally launched in 2015, the Kobe 9 Elite ‘What The’ was a mashup of previous Kobe 9 colourways, blending neon green, blue, and orange hues. Reflective silver accents added an extra dose of hardwood swagger. Crafted with Nike's Flyknit technology, this retro release is a welcome sight for Mamba-heads, especially given the soaring prices of Kobe’s signature sneakers on the secondary market.

The ninth signature sneaker in Kobe Bryant's arsenal, the Kobe 9, remains a favourite among hoops enthusiasts. Designed by veteran Nike designer Eric Avar, this model marked a deliberate shift in the line by reintroducing a high-top silhouette. Focused on balancing support and mobility, the Kobe 9 drew visual inspiration from boxing footwear.
