Courtroom Catfight: PUMA Pounce on Tiger Woods In Logo Lawsuit
We’re a little over a week into the new year, and 2025 has already seen its first sneaker lawsuit: PUMA have launched legal action against Tiger Woods's golf brand, Sun Day Red, claiming that its leaping tiger logo infringes on PUMA's iconic trademark.
‘Due to the confusing similarity of the marks and the identical, legally identical, or closely related nature of the goods and services of the parties, consumer confusion is likely between the Challenged Marks and the Leaping Cat logo,’ said PUMA in the court filing.
This isn’t the first time Tiger Woods’s fledgling label has faced legal challenges. In September 2024, Tigeraire, a company specialising in cooling products for athletes, filed a notice of opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, claiming that Sun Day Red had ‘unlawfully hijacked’ its tiger logo design. The Tigeraire case is still pending in federal court.
Sun Day Red was launched by Tiger Woods in collaboration with TaylorMade in May 2024. Its leaping tiger logo, featuring 15 stripes, symbolises Woods’s 15 major championship victories. Before launching his own brand, Woods had a 27-year partnership with Nike.
As of now, representatives for Sun Day Red and TaylorMade have not publicly commented on PUMA's lawsuit. If the two parties cannot come to an agreement, the case would likely go to trial in September 2026.
