J.L-A-L and HOKA Stride Ahead on the MAFATE X
and HOKA are going the distance with their newest colab, as they retool the MAFATE X in two tonal colourways. Blending high-performance design with stripped-back aesthetics, the project stays true to the silhouette’s technical roots while layering in mixing in small details that speak to both brands’ sensibilities.
At its core, the MAFATE X is built for distance. A dual-density premium foam chassis is capped with a PEBA layer to maximise energy return, while a forked carbon fibre plate ensures responsive propulsion. The upper is crafted from super-lightweight, breathable textile, paired with a patent-pending dynamic vamp that secures the fit and helps with drainage on the move. Underneath, the Vibram Megagrip outsole – with 3.5 mm lugs and zonal rubber pods – delivers grip across rocky paths, slick surfaces and everything in between. Added stability features like HOKA’s Active Foot Frame, MetaRocker geometry, gusseted tongue and a reinforced toe cap make the package trail-ready.
Where J.L-A-L steps in is with the colour treatments. The 'Jet Black/Espresso' edition balances a deep black base with warm brown overlays, broken up with subtle reflective detailing. Its counterpart, 'Beluga/Volcanic Ash', brings cooler tones, combining soft grey underlays with muted overlays for a more understated look. Both are finished with co-branded elements on the tongue and heel, tonal lace loops and moulded TPU heel counters that add structure without overcomplicating the design.
