Retro Runs: Nike Reveal Heritage-Packed Running Lineup
In addition to the already documented Alphafly 3, Nike have revealed the full lineup of their 'International Running Pack', set to land on first in Tokyo, and then globally on September 10. Totalling four silhouettes, the collection takes cues from Japanese run clubs and their appreciation for classic design, blending heritage details with modern cushioning and support.
Additional models include the Pegasus 41, dressed in green and inspired by the classic Waffle Racer, while the Vomero 18, in gold and red, looks to the LD-1000 – Nike’s original long-distance trainer.
'Our goal in designing the Nike "International Running Pack" was to represent the deep relationship between Nike and Japan, dating back to our first years as a brand,' says Katsunobu Asayama, lead designer of the footwear collection. 'We wanted to meet Japanese runners’ appreciation for vintage styles by looking into our archive and applying some of our classic designs to modern Nike Running silhouettes – bringing that vintage look the community loves to our latest footwear innovations.'
The 'International Running Pack' will drop exclusively via UNION RUNNING DEPT. BY NIKE in Tokyo on August 30. The collection is then set to launch throughout Japan on September 5 before releasing globally at Nike and select retailers on September 10.
2025 marks 50 years since the passing of running prodigy Steve Prefontaine, so it’s only right that Nike are honouring his legacy with the Vaporfly 4 'Pre Montreal' — a tribute to the legendary Oregon athlete's footwear of choice.
Hailing from Coos Bay, the preternatural track talent is regarded as one of the most influential American distance runners of the early 1970s. Known for his aggressive front-running style, he set every American record between 2,000 and 10,000 meters by the age of 24. His determination and charisma made him a standout athlete during a time when distance running was still growing in the U.S.
During his career, Prefontaine worked closely with Bill Bowerman. The Nike co-founder wasn’t just his coach but also a key figure in developing running shoes tailored to Pre’s needs. Together, they created the Pre Montreal — a lightweight spike made from nylon and suede, designed for the 1976 Olympics. The silhouette was the only Swoosh model to carry Prefontaine’s name.
Unfortunately, Prefontaine passed away in a car accident on May 30, 1975, before he could compete in Montreal. While he never raced in the Olympics wearing the shoe named after him, the upcoming iteration serves as an important part of his legacy.
This Vaporfly 4 debuts in a red, white and blue colourway as homage to its Olympic roots. Details like 'Nike INTL' and 'Road Racing VF' appear printed on the midsole – emphasising that racing inspiration – while a transparent upper and replaced sculpted sole keep the silhouette lightweight and responsive.
Next, a ZoomX midsole delivers advanced cushioning designed for speed. A sepia-toned heel adds a vintage touch, and a bold, curved Swoosh with a classic Nike logo completes the look.
